Catherine, a twelve-year-old big sister, has a list of rules for her little brother David. For example, “chew with your mouth closed” and “no putting toys in the fish tank”. David has autism, and his sister is trying everything she can to make him seem more normal. Yet, that summer, Catherine meets two new friends who change her perspective of “normal”. She realizes that although her little brother is different in some ways, he does not limit her from unconditional love, and a regular, happy life. I love this book- it’s beautifully written for readers ages nine to thirteen. Rules is truly inspirational, as if you were actually living the main character’s life. A moving novel!
