The Candy Smash may have caught my eye because of its funky title, adorable cover, and also because of my major sweet tooth. The book itself contained content that was slightly under my reading level. And, yes, I’ll admit it wasn’t my favorite. But the style of writing that Jacqueline Davies used to write this book is very age appropriate and readers grades 4th-6th should find it relatable . Two siblings, Evan and Jessie, are in the same classroom. Valentines Day is around the corner, and the excitement is building, bringing up the unfamiliar subject of crushes and young love. Jessie is determined to figure out who her classmates “like” for the head story in the class newspaper, while Evan is curious about who keeps leaving him love messages on candy hearts. At the end, the brother and sister realize some things go without reason, being love and candy in this sweet novel.
